3 Day Toubkal Trip

Toubkal overview

Standing at 4,167m, Mount Toubkal is the highest peak in North Africa and the crown of Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains. Accessible enough for fit trekkers with no technical climbing experience, yet wild and dramatic enough to feel like a genuine expedition, it’s one of the most rewarding mountain experiences on the planet.

The route takes you through spectacular High Atlas scenery, from the traditional Berber village of Imlil past ancient mule trails, high mountain refuges, and sweeping ridgelines before the final push to the summit.

At Vertex Expeditions, every trek is fully guided by experienced local mountain guides who know the mountains inside out, ensuring a personal and high-quality experience from start to finish. Whether you’re looking for a fast summit push or a more gradual ascent with time to acclimatise, we have an option to suit you.

Standing on the roof of North Africa is something you won’t forget.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech - Imlil - Toubkal Refuge

Starting in the bustling city of Marrakech our team will pick you up from your accommodation in the morning and take you to Imlil (1.5hour drive), where the adventure really begins. Upon your arrival you will meet your local mountain guide and discuss the trek to come over a traditional Moroccan tea. Imlil sits at 1740m and is a quaint and traditional mountainous village that boasts some incredible views of the Atlas Mountain Range.

You will then quickly start your approach trek to the Toubkal base camp at 3207m; traversing the stunning Chamharouch Shrine with a stop for a pre-prepared lunch. The approach will take between 5 and 6hours and involves a hefty 1467m of elevation but you’ll be welcomed with open arms at the base camp refuge for a Moroccan dinner with your guide and group. This is a great time to discuss the day to come and get involved with the local culture before a night in the refuge.

Day 2: Toubkal Refuge - Toubkal Summit - Toubkal Refuge

The big day! Breakfast will be served at the refuge to fuel your summit day and the near on 1000m of elevation to come. The ascent takes around 3hours and once at the top you will have a panoramic 360-degree view of the Atlas Mountains – At this moment you will be standing at the highest point in the entirety of North Africa and join the 0.1% of people that have summited a 4000m mountain. Although your work is not done you are in fact halfway.

After taking in the views and reflecting on your colossal achievement you will begin the trek back to the refuge where a well deserved lunch will be waiting. You will have plenty of time to reflect on the day and relax those tired legs as you stay another night at the refuge. The day 2 trek encompasses 6-7hours of trekking/climbing so your bed will be welcome!

Day 3: Toubkal Refuge - Imlil - Marrakech

To finish your adventure you start with another refuge breakfast to fuel the 4 to 5 hour trek back to Imlil. Our team will serve another traditional Moroccan lunch in a Imlil guesthouse before driving you back to your Marrakech accommodation. This is a great time to explore Imlil and meet some of the locals.
